Critical Perspectives in Archaeology, 15 ECTS credits

The course offers an introduction to current critical perspectives
in archaeology, with emphasis on gender theory and postcolonial theory, and
their contribution to critical reflections in contemporary archaeology, both as
science and popular culture. Central perspectives within gender research that
will be treated are Feminisms, Masculinities, and Queer. Key postcolonial
concepts that will be discussed are Race, Culture, Teleological development, and
The Other. These perspectives and concepts are explored through lectures, text
seminars, literature studies, and practical exercises where they are used in
analyses of contemporary archaeology and cultural heritage management. The aim
of the course is to give the student conceptual tools for engaged critical
reflections on the societal role of archaeology and heritage management, in
future research and/or work.

With its applied study of current critical perspectives in relation to archaeology and heritage management, this course is particularly useful for Master students in archaeology, cultural heritage management, history, and similar subjects, as well as for active professionals in the field of archaeology and heritage management.

Language: The course is given in English, except for the case when all students are Swedish speaking.
